Traveling without easy access to wi-fi is problematic. Google has a new  tool that allows users to be in a place without Internet access — whether on a sidewalk in New York City or a back road in Tuscany — and pull up a map that lets them get directions and use turn-by-turn voice navigation, as well as search for places (art galleries, restaurants, hotels, museums) and see details including hours, phone numbers and reviews.

Ah, the sadness that is the nearly obsolete payphone. What to do with all those broken down shells encasing what once took a nickel, dime and eventually two bits to reach your lifeline when your car broke down, you just arrived in town or (channeling Don Draper and the other Mad Men) met a cutie in a cocktail lounge and needed to let your wife know you wouldn't be home for dinner? It's not like you used to go around with your own personl phone in your pocket. But now you do. It's hardly rocket science, but it looks like New York City has a solution for unsighlty and little used payphone kiosks. Turn them into Wi-Fi hotspots!
