Twitter Bars Milo Yiannopoulos in Wake of Leslie Jones’s Reports of Abuse

Twitter Bars Milo Yiannopoulos in Wake of Leslie Jones’s Reports of Abuse | Communications Major | Scoop.it

The ban against Mr. Yiannopoulos, a technology editor at the conservative news site Breitbart and known by his Twitter handle, @Nero, follows a campaign of prolonged abuse against Leslie Jones, a comedian and co-star of the recently released “Ghostbusters” movie. The film and its stars have come under fire from various parts of the internet for months, after it was first revealed that the reboot of the 1984 film would feature an all-female cast.

Ms. Jones in particular has borne the brunt of the online abuse in recent days, especially since the release of “Ghostbusters” in the United States on Friday. Hundreds of anonymous Twitter commenters hurled racist and sexist remarks at the star’s Twitter account, rallied and directed by Mr. Yiannopoulos this week.

The Power of #YesAllWomen | Communications Major | Scoop.it

A series of tweets about sexual harassment, rape, and misogyny, categorized under the hashtag #YesAllWomen was started after Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old man, went on a shooting spree on Isla Vista, near the University of California Santa Barbara, killing six people before committing suicide. In the weeks leading up to the killings, Rodger posted a series of angry, bathetic YouTube videos and a 137-page autobiographical “manifesto,” declaring his hatred of all women for the rejection and disdain he claims they dealt him throughout his life.

The Internet in 2014 Was Basically Just Hackers, Misogynists, and Kim Kardashian’s Ass

The Internet in 2014 Was Basically Just Hackers, Misogynists, and Kim Kardashian’s Ass | Communications Major | Scoop.it

Remember when the internet used to be fun?

In 2014, this platform was used for everything from charity to culture wars to gross acts of nudity. The human race is louder, angrier, shallower, and sometimes funnier than ever before and the stakes are getting higher every day.

Thanks Martin Robbins and VICE for writing the piece that all of us who write about life online wanted to write, if only we could just have blocked out the online chatter long enough to do so.

Pretty Much Every Woman in Online Publishing Can Agree On This

Pretty Much Every Woman in Online Publishing Can Agree On This | Communications Major | Scoop.it

Bryan Goldberg, the founder of Bleacher Report, made news last week, though not in the way he intended. He announced that he’d raised $6.5 million for a new venture -- a women’s web site called Bustle.

Goldberg got roundly, and deservedly, thrashed after his self-written funding announcement appeared on PandoDaily. The problem: Goldberg announced he was going to “completely transform women’s publishing” by running celebrity escapades next to serious news items "because we recognize how many diverse interests are shared amongst the next generation of women.”

That didn’t go over too well, given that lots of people have been working quite hard, for some time, thank you, to completely transform women’s publishing -- in a much more radical way than Goldberg seems to be aware of. And many of them are, unlike Goldberg, actual women.
