Twitter Bars Milo Yiannopoulos in Wake of Leslie Jones’s Reports of Abuse

Twitter Bars Milo Yiannopoulos in Wake of Leslie Jones’s Reports of Abuse | Communications Major | Scoop.it

The ban against Mr. Yiannopoulos, a technology editor at the conservative news site Breitbart and known by his Twitter handle, @Nero, follows a campaign of prolonged abuse against Leslie Jones, a comedian and co-star of the recently released “Ghostbusters” movie. The film and its stars have come under fire from various parts of the internet for months, after it was first revealed that the reboot of the 1984 film would feature an all-female cast.

Ms. Jones in particular has borne the brunt of the online abuse in recent days, especially since the release of “Ghostbusters” in the United States on Friday. Hundreds of anonymous Twitter commenters hurled racist and sexist remarks at the star’s Twitter account, rallied and directed by Mr. Yiannopoulos this week.

Twitter's Algorithmic Timeline Switch Is All Your Own Fault

Twitter's Algorithmic Timeline Switch Is All Your Own Fault | Communications Major | Scoop.it

By liking and retweeting every pointless and inconsequential Tweet in the past we have given the Twitter algorithm an untrue insight into what we really want to see. You will be served up with everything based on your past history this way, not what is truly meaningful. If you surround yourself with celebrities and like everything they say, that’s all you’ll ever see. Conversely, if you like tweets about local affairs and politics, then you’ll miss out on Kim Kardashian’s latest line of elastic band lingerie. It’s not all bad…

Is Anybody Out There? What People Are Talking About Online This Week, Sept. 24-28

Is Anybody Out There? What People Are Talking About Online This Week, Sept. 24-28 | Communications Major | Scoop.it

I've just had a few weeks away from my desk and laptop and daily routine of tracking what people are talking about online only to return this week and wonder, did anybody even know I was gone?

In an era of breaking us down into percentages - 99%, 47%, 8% (that last figure is the percentage of adults who use Twitter on a daily basis) - and obsessively counting followers, connections, "friends", page views and hits it's easy to get caught up in "your" numbers and start wondering what - if anything - do they mean? And even, if they matter.
