Why the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) needs to bite the dust. If the same-sex partner of an American pioneer in space — Sally Ride – they were together 27 years — cannot receive the same benefits due to any other federal employee in a heterosexual marriage, we are sending a terrible message to our next generation about our values.

Ride didn't hide the fact of her sexual orientation from her family and friends during her lifetime, anyway, nor did she want it hidden from from the public in her death.

It's hard to be courageous after you have died, but pioneering U.S. astronaut Sally Ride managed this with her posthumous coming out as being partnered with a woman for 27 years.
