By now, practically all of America has heard that Michael Sam on Saturday was picked by the St. Louis Rams, making him the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. And by now, you’ve probably seen the photo of Sam tearfully kissing his boyfriend upon hearing the news, seen the video of them sharing an emotional kiss, and maybe even seen the video of Sam smearing cake into his boyfriend’s face, then kissing him. But what you may not have heard is a strong backlash from right-wing Christians, who make a valuable point (even when using less than appropriate language). When Tim Tebow, an in-your-face Christian flaunted his religious beliefs, he was repeatedly mocked, in many cases by the same people who are celebrating Michael Sam's public displays of affection.

The Jim Henson Company and Chick-fil-A battle is raging on. Just one day after the Jim Henson Co. announced that it did "not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors" due to Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy's admission that he was "guilty as charged" when it comes to his Christian stance on the definition of marriage, the fast-food company announced a "voluntary recall" of all Jim Henson Creature Shop Puppet Kids Meal toys.

Why not? With DOMA dead and LGBT rights continuing to make strides around the world a little history is a good thing. It may also help to raise awareness about the struggles the LGBT community has overcome and help unite forces to combat current oppression in Russia, the Middle East and some African countries that have harsh anti-gay laws that threaten the very livelihood of LGBT people.

Leave it to Jodie Foster, the venerable 50-year-old star with the 47-year career, to unbalance the Twitterverse in a way the social network has not quite experienced yet. Why the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) needs to bite the dust. If the same-sex partner of an American pioneer in space — Sally Ride – they were together 27 years — cannot receive the same benefits due to any other federal employee in a heterosexual marriage, we are sending a terrible message to our next generation about our values.

We are fast approaching the day when someone comes out as gay - famous or non - and no one will really care. The day when it makes about as much difference as telling someone you have green eyes or write with your left hand or speak Lithuanian as second langauge. It's something a little interesting, a little different, but nothing that's going to stop the world from turning. That day isn't here quite yet. But when it is, the reaction is likely to be about as dispassionate as that from Madame Secretary. Indeed!
